Duane Bender

Duane Bender is a licensed Professional Software Engineer (P.Eng.) and enterprise technology architect with nearly 20 years of practical experience in software engineering and systems development. His work has primarily involved the design and construction of large-scale, high-performance distributed software and systems for eBusiness and eHealth. Mr. Bender is currently the Principal Investigator for the Applied Research program at Mohawk College. The focuses on the application of information technology to healthcare ("eHealth"). With the sponsorship of NSERC, Mohawk is currently building a reference implementation of the national electronic health care record system architecture as published by Canada Health Infoway. A team led by Duane created and published the Mohawk College App which is currently available on the Apple iTunes Store. Duane Bender currently holds a faculty position as Professor of Software Engineering Technology at Mohawk College and is currently completing post-graduate work in the area of Software Engineering at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Christy Taberner OT Reg. (Ont.) is an occupational therapist and faculty in the Accessible learning services department at Mohawk College in Hamilton Ontario.  Christy’s primary research interests include eHealth and mHealth solutions which promote consumer engagement, empowerment and health promotion. Currently Christy has been seconded to the applied research department at Mohawk College to create a transdiscipline collaborative learning lab for students to develop mobile health applications. Students are taught to use evidence based research to guide design work. Over the past year Christy has led development and implementation of applications to assist with diabetes management, post transplant care and smoking cessation.

Mark Casselman, M.Sc., PMP is Senior Project Manager, Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, University Health Network. His focus is design and evaluation of mHealth applications that support personal health management, behaviour change, and improved health outcomes.

Over the past five years at University Health Network, Mark has led development and implementation of Chronic Disease Management strategy, Diabetes Patient Portal, and consumer applications to improve access to health information. He has also led regional healthcare transformation initiatives on a regional and provincial scale. Mark has experience working with executive-level and clinical stakeholders across multiple sectors and agencies within the Canadian healthcare ecosystem – hospital sector (acute and rehab), community care sector, primary care sector, long-term care sector, Local Health Integration Networks, Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, eHealth Ontario, and Canada Health Infoway. Recently, Mark was seconded to eHealth Ontario to develop a strategic proposition for Consumer eHealth within the agency. Currently, Mark is launching a clinical trial for bant — an iPhone diabetes app developed at the Centre for eHealth Innovation — with the Hospital for Sick Children. He is a Board Director at Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre, and Advisory Board Member for Abbott Canada Patients@Heart Initiative. Prior to working at University Health Network, Mark was a professor at Humber College (Toronto) in the Health Promotion program, and Science Editor for Weider Publications (Los Angeles).
